Residue analysis of organochlorine pesticides in water and sediments from Agboyi Creek, Lagos
نویسنده
چکیده
Microlayer water, mixed layer water, epipellic and benthic sediments were collected from Agboyi Creek, Lagos to analyse organochlorine pesticide residues. Sampling was conducted between December 2008 and September 2009 during the dry and wet seasons to study effects of seasonal variation on the samples. Water samples were subjected to liquid-liquid extraction using dichloromethane, while sediments were subjected to cold extraction with petroleum ether/acetone (1:1 v/v) mixture and cleanup on silica gel adsorbents. The samples were analyzed for aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, DDT, heptachlor, HCH, endosulfan, chlordane and methoxychlor. The detection and determination of the pesticide residues were performed by injecting 1 μL of purified extract into the injection port of a gas chromatograph with a 63 Ni electron capture detector (GC-μECD Agilent 7890A) equipped with ChemStation software. Pesticide residues in the epipellic and benthic sediments were higher than the residues in the water. The mixed layer water showed enhanced levels of residues when compared with the microlayer water. The residue levels were higher during the dry season than the wet season. The levels of residues in the water and sediments were below the maximum permissive residue limits.

Accumulation and distribution of persistent organochlorine pesticides and their contamination of surface water and sediments of the Sabarmati River, India
Pesticides are chemical substances used to control pests in an effort to increase crop production and quality, and food storage. The levels of pesticides in different environmental compartments, such as water, soil, agricultural foods, and products of animal origin, have become a relevant issue. In this study, the levels of pesticide residues in Sabarmati River of Gujarat, India, have been inve...

Background: Chlorinated pesticides have been used in pest control for several decades in the world. These compounds are still applied in many regions, and their continuous usage has resulted in their bioaccumulation and residue in the food chain. These residues could transfer to food products and accumulate in fat tissues. Undoubtedly, the breast milk could be a significant biomarker for esti...

متن کاملDetermination of organochlorine pesticide residues in the raw milk taken from milk collection centers in Urmia in 2020
Background and Objective: Milk is one of the most important components of human food. In recent decades, the continued use of pesticides has led to contamination of soil, water, air and milk and caused public concern in the community. Long-term exposure to pesticide residuals in the food chain can be harmful. Therefore, there is a need to control environmental conditions in order to improve its...
متن کاملThe Organochlorine Pesticides Residue Levels in Karun River Water
BACKGROUND The organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are among the most commonly used in water streams around the world. Most of these contaminants are highly hydrophobic and persist in sediments of rivers and lakes. Studies have suggested that OCPs may affect the normal function of the human and wildlife endocrine systems. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to determine the concentrations of sel...
